Saint John for the Urban Explorer Sample Itineraries

A day

Get up and at ‘em early, and head to the Saint John City Market for breakfast. Be sure to spend some time browsing Canada’s oldest continuing farmer’s market, the beating heart of this historic city.

Spend the morning exploring beautiful historic uptown. Plan to take one of three self-guided Historic Walking Tours, or the self-guided Art in Public Places Walking Tour, a great way to familiarize yourself with the uptown area, while taking in hundreds of years of architecture.

Grab lunch at an uptown restaurant or pub, over 60 options located within walking distance!

Spend the afternoon browsing local galleries. Saint John’s visual arts scene is as multi-faceted as it is lively. From the works of Miller Brittain, Fred Ross and John Hooper, to Herzl Kashetsky, Suzanne Hill and Lynn Wigginton – and dozens of others from around the province – our galleries are bursting with works that embrace the beauty of this place.

Art not necessarily your scene? Spend the afternoon shopping at unique boutiques and eclectic shops, offering everything from artistic giftware to hiking boots, and designer clothing to handmade mittens. You’ll find everything you’re looking for, plus a whole bunch of wonderful items you didn’t even know you needed until you saw them!

After a long day on your feet spend the evening relaxing on the Market Square Boardwalk. Grab dinner at one of the fabulous boardwalk options and spend the evening enjoying the evening’s entertainment on the Boardwalk stage.

A weekend

Stoll Harbour Passage’s cranberry-coloured trail, a series of interconnected walkways, lookouts and heritage sites linking the Reversing Rapids to uptown Saint John. Interpretive structures and panels along the way bring Saint John’s vibrant shipbuilding and waterfront history to life, and highlight our extraordinary natural environment.

Visit one of multiple museums located within the uptown. Spend an hour or two at the New Brunswick Museum enjoying stunning world-class exhibits, visiting the “Hall of Great Whales,” the Fundy Tidal Tower, the Family Discovery Gallery or the unique gift shop.

Explore Barbour’s General Store, visit the newly restored King’s Square Bandstand, or wander through numerous historic churches and cemeteries.

Take in a show at the Imperial Theatre or a concert or hockey game at Harbour Station. Or enjoy the local pub scene! Hob nob with locals at Britt’s Pub, check out the varied beer selection at Saint John Ale House or try your hand as an amateur sommelier at Happinez Wine Bar.

Have More Time?

Take a customized walking tour with the New Brunswick Museum, a Walk and Sample Tour with Uncorked Wine Tours, or a private walking tour with a local historian.

Treat yourself to some serious R & R! Spend a relaxing morning at Element5 Spa.

Visit the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum, the Saint John Firefighter’s Museum, the Saint John Police Museum, or step through time at Loyalist House.
