Black History Month Flag Raising

February 03

Black History Month is an important occasion to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of Black Canadians and Afro-descendants living in Canada.

The inaugural Pan-African flag-raising to ceremony will kick off the beginning of Black History Month month in an historic way. This is the first time a flag is being raised in celebration of Black History Month in New Brunswick, making history in Saint John.

Black History Month is an opportunity for all Canadians to learn and reflect on the many contributions Black Canadians have made to Canada. This year’s theme for Black History Month is “Canadians of African Descent: Going forward, guided by the past”. This was inspired by the theme of the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024).

A note on the traditional Adinkra symbol featured on the poster:
Feet forward, head turned backward, the Sankofa bird reflects on the past to build a successful future.
