Saint John Pride's Tips & Tricks
We asked the team at Saint John Pride for tips to help folks get the most out of their Pride experience. Their top recommendations are:
- Wear something with your flag on it, even if it's as small as a pin. This way, other people can identify you and it will help you make new friends!
- Attend events you normally wouldn't. Maybe documentaries aren't your 'thing'. But if you go, there's a chance you might learn something about our history or meet a new friend.
- Check to see if your work has a Pride group or initiative. Lots of places will have their own Pride boards that often submit floats or walking groups into parades. Getting yourself involved will be a great way to find others to attend Pride with!
- Take some allies with you. Pride is about our community, but we also happily welcome allies. So if you can't find any queer people to go with, then you can always bring your straight besties.
- Learn as much as you can about history. It's important to remember why we have Pride, so even just a simple Google search will open your eyes to so many things.
- If you're shy, a great way to make friends is by finding the local queer Facebook group. The one for Saint John is called "Queer Saint John" and the one for New Brunswick is called "Queer New Brunswick". You can participate in group conversations and find out about different events going on.
- Make sure you grab your tickets in advance. A lot of ticketed events will sell out, so it's always good to grab tickets as soon as possible.
- Don't be afraid to reach out to the Saint John Pride Board to ask questions - that's what we're here for!
- Make sure you check out the Saint John Pride website often for updates and information.
- Look out for the official "Pride Guide" which will be online and printed. This will have the whole Pride schedule in it, plus tips, tricks, and all kinds of other good information.
